Recently, I’ve been using a small furnace to recycle and cast aluminum cans into other small forms. I use a plaster/silica investment and a 3D printed plastic model, first burning out the plastic in my kiln, and then pouring the liquid aluminum into the investment.

These cast aluminum hands were “sampled” from 3D digital scans – shared online by a national museum in Denmark – of casts of Roman statues copied from Greek originals.

In addition to using these cast hands in sculptures, I’ve also been making photographs, showing both an image of the original statue and a sample of the borrowed hand.

These are photographs are working to capture something of the strange disembodiment of these digital fragments.
